Freshwater Dorado

Freshwater Dorado (Salminus maxillosus) is a tropical and sub-tropical fish native to the rivers of northern Argentina, southern Brazil, Paraguay, eastern Uruguay, and southern Bolivia.

The nickname “Tiger of the rivers“ speaks clearly of the main virtues of the dorado: its fighting spirit and the ability to obtain its food. Though these fish have always been there, only recently have foreign anglers discovered the dorado, a gamefish perfectly suited for the fly rod.

It is among the most beautiful fish for its golden, red, and black coloring. Its torpedo body and laterally compressed shape, together with its mouth with a strong jaw, give it away as a great hunter. It is a formidable predator and great gamefish.

It’s the top predator in it’s ecosystem, and preys on all types of bait fish, mainly mojarra and sabalo. Other food sources such as frogs, mice and birds are also occasional targets. Sometimes a lonely hunter, but usually a schooling fish, they stalk the large schools of mojarras and sabalos all day long. When the right conditions are present they enter a feeding frenzy that sends the frantic school of bait fish leaping from the water creating a huge commotion. The sound of dorados on the hunt !!
