What to Bring

  • Polarized glasses
  • Rain gear & hat
  • Still & Video Camera
  • Waders: Not essential but are useful on occassions.
  • Fishing equipment

An angler already fishing for bonefish, salmon or stripped bass has the right equipment for Dorado.

The most versatile rod is a 9 feet long, 7 or 8 weight coupled with a good disc drag reel and at least 100 yards of 20 pound backing.

Short leaders ( 3 to 5 feet ) with 6/8 inches of 20 pound shock wire tippet to attatch the fly.

Sinking tip line, Teeny 200 and 300 lines (or equivalents) and floating line (bass bug tapers are best)

The flies used for dorado are often the same as those tied for saltwater species and aggressive freshwater fish, such as largemouth and peacock bass.
Deerhair diving patterns, Lefty's Deceivers, Clouser minnows, foam poppers, and almost any medium-to-large baitfish pattern tied in 2/0 and 3/0 heavy wire hooks will work.
In discolored water, the most popular and effective flies are black, tied in a style that pushes a lot of water.

This ones should take about half of your flybox space
